League: National Baseball Hall of Fame

History: Wade Boggs began an 18-year Big League career in 1982 with the Boston Red Sox. His hitting was a particular calling card, winning eight Silver Slugger Awards and five American League batting titles. The first of his batting titles came in 1983, the start of a seven-season stretch in which he had at least 200 hits each season, an American League record that has only since been bested by Ichiro Suzuki. Following a down year in 1992 Boggs left the Red Sox and joined their rivals, the New York Yankees. He went on to record four straight seasons with a batting average of .300 or better and won two Gold Glove awards. He helped the Yankees to win the 1996 World Series against the Atlanta Braves, his only World Series title. He played a pivotal role in Game 6 of the series, drawing a bases-loaded walk as a pinch hitter in the 10th inning to force the go-ahead run before they ultimately won 8-6 and clinched the series, and Boggs famously celebrated by jumping on the back of a NYPD police horse and riding it around the field. Boggs spent 1998 and ’99, the final two seasons of his career, with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. While with the Devil Rays he recorded his 3,000th hit, and became the first player in history to hit a home run for their 3,000th hit. Boggs was inducted into the Hall of Fame on his first ballot in 2005. The number 26 he wore with the Red Sox was retired by Boston, and the Devil Rays retired his number 12 jersey.
