A sterling silver and eighteen carat gold lighter set with baguette cut sapphires. This very rare, perhaps unique, example is beautifully made with a fully ribbed sterling body. The crisp and tight integrated hinged lid work perfectly, slightly extending the flint wheel once open, and snapping closed tightly. The body has a stunning, handmade, sapphire set anchor with rope detail running down the left side of the lighter. This detail is not gold plated, but solid eighteen carat. It has stamped the French eagle head assay mark on the top section, close to the rope. It is stamped Hermès on the inside fuel compartment. It is fully marked on the inside of the removable base with registration marks '349', and the boar head for sterling. There is also the makers mark "JC" and the Arc de Triomphe stamped into this area for the French lighter company Chanteloup. The makers marks, as well as the registration code '349' are also stamped into the inside back of the lid. It was made for Hermès to retail in their luxury boutiques. This company eventually went on to sell this panted design of the swing flint to Cartier, who still use this design today. When opening the lid, the flint wheel moves out to make striking the flint easier. This example was produced circa 1950's.
