League: National Baseball Hall of Fame

History: Catfish Hunter spent the first 10 seasons of his 15-year career with the Athletics organization, first playing in Kansas City then moving with the franchise to Oakland in 1968. In that ’68 season - coincidentally coined “the Year of the Pitcher” in large part due to the play of Bob Gibson - Catfish pitched a perfect game against the Minnesota Twins on May 8. He also got three hits of his own, and drove in three of the team’s four runs in addition to his performance on the mound in that game. He is a five-time World Series Champion, winning in 1972-1974 with the A’s and in ’77 and ’78 with the Yankees after joining the team as a free agent in ’75. His move to the Yankees made him the highest paid player in baseball, as well as the highest paid pitcher in history up to that point as he signed a five-year deal with $3.35 million. Hunter twice led MLB in wins in 1974 and 1975, and in ’74 he was the American League ERA leader with 2.49 and earned the AL Cy Young Award. Hunter retired following the 1979 season, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987. Four years after being inducted, the Oakland A’s retired his number 27 jersey in 1991. Having held both the A’s and Yankees organizations in high regard, Catfish Hunter declined to choose either team to be memorialized on his Hall of Fame plaque, resulting in no logo appearing on his cap.
